How many different meanings are there for the word shed?

How many different meanings are there for the word shed?

I would like to buy a nice garden shed.
Can we shed some light on that
Or do we want to shed some weight
How about shedding some paper; Sorry shred some paper
Is shed tastic a word; no apparently not.
Sheduling. Oops that should be scheduling.
Lets have some proper meanings of the word shed.
Is there a band called shed 7. From Sheffield I believe.

Perhaps we should shed a tear, bur really the word shed in this instance in similar to shed some weight or a snake sheds it skin of course so the word shed doesn’t count here.

After the water shed, nice one the order to send the kids to bed. Unfair if you are that child of course who is likely to shed a tear at missing the shed in eastenders.

Well there doesn’t seem many variations listed so far. Ok we all know about different types of shed such as cow sheds or milking sheds but these are all types of the word shed used for storage or shelter.

I would be fun to see how many different meanings we could get for the word shed, so please leave your ideas below.

Tongue and Groove Floor versus OSB Floor

Tongue and Groove Floor versus an  OSB Floor

Which type of floor is best for your Garden shed or summerhouse. Tongue and Groove or OSB.

Tongue and Groove floors for your Garden Shed or summerhouse do look much nicer than an OSB floor in your Garden Shed or summerhouse.

If you use your Garden shed or summerhouse regularly your floor will become almost black with dirt, so eventually your attractive tongue and groove floor will look pretty much like the equivalent OSB one in your Garden Shed or Summerhouse.

Walk on a Tongue and Groove floor in your Garden shed and it may tend to bounce a little especially if floor bearers under the Garden Shed floor are few and far between.

The OSB floor in your Garden shed or summerhouse feels much sturdier when walking on it and is probably better for storing heavier items in your Garden Shed.

Your Garden Shed or summerhouse tongue and Groove floor should last for years even if it gets wet. Your OSB one will too unless it becomes saturated with water. Although OSB is water resistant if it gets very wet it will deteriorate. The OSB being inside your garden shed or summerhouse the problems of being wet should not be an issue.

If you really do not like the appearance of OSB in your Garden shed or Summerhouse, it does paint very well or you could cover it will another flooring material.

So which should you go for. In our opinion go for OSB if the Garden Shed or summerhouse is cheaper than the equivalent tongue and Floor.

You will enjoy an instant cash saving and it will last just as long as your tongue and groove one provided it stays dry.

What happens to your wooden shed or summerhouse in a hot summer?

What happens to your wooden shed or summerhouse in a hot summer?

Timber is a natural product and will expand in wet or damp conditions when it absorbs moisture. This moisture then evaporates in warm and dry conditions.

It is Spring and you have just built your lovely new shed, which you are very proud of. The shed sits proudly in the garden with its gleaming new cost of wood protector.

You visit the shed everyday, like a child with a new toy, and you are particulary pleased with the shed as it is a shed you have assembled with your own hands.

The hot weather comes so you take the bbq out of the shed as well as the garden furniture stored in the shed.

Sitting one weekend in your lovely new recliner with a glass of wine in one hand or a glass of beer in the other admiring your lovely shed, clank! you drop your glass of wine or beer as you suddenly realise a big gap in the side wall of your shed. £$%^^% you cry and run into the shed to examine it inside. You are suddenly sweating buckets. Crikey it is hot in this shed then you rush out of the shed again for some fresh air.

My lovely new shed it is ruined. Whoa hang on here, lets look at what has happened to your shed. You have taken your garden furniture out of the shed to enjoy the great weather. You mow the lawn less and less as the grass is too dry to grow. There is no need to be using your tools from the shed as it is too hot.

So you have no reason to enter your shed for a week or so. The shed windows are closed tight, the shed door is shut and it is hot outside the shed. The inside of your shed is becoming hotter and hotter, probably well over 120F when the sun is at its highest point. It is like an oven inside your shed. The moisture from the timber is rapidly evaporating. The shed timber is starting to shrink. This is actually what happens to timber. Have you ever noticed inside your home that sometimes your doors become difficult to close during the winter months, but open very easily during the summer months. This is down to the timber expanding with moisture content and contracting when the moisture content evaporates. The same thing happens to your shed.

So how do I stop this happening to my shed? When it becomes very hot, open a shed window or shed door, to help get air inside the shed, therefore keeping the inside temperature of the shed down.

This seems a strange one but it works. Put a bucket of water inside the shed so the timber takes in moisture again. This will prevent excess shrinkage of the shed timber. Most shed manufaturers kiln dry their timber before manufacture, but nevertheless on those damp drys it is nigh on impossible to prevent timbers becoming damp.

Your shed is not ruined though. The shed boards will usually expand back into place once the wet damp weather returns.

Remember it is timber, it expands and shrinks naturally, tolerances are built into the shed when manufacturing them, but sometimes the hot weather can push those tolerances over and beyond its limits.  It is not a manufacturing fault but just the way timber reacts to the British weather.

The Shire Harris 16 x 6 Apex Garden Shed

The Shire Harris 16 x 6 Apex Garden Shed

This Garden Shed is probably the best Garden Shed deal around in the UK today.

With a total of 96 square feet of storage space this garden shed is a must if you have the garden for it.

The Shire Harris Garden Shed feature double doors for easy access

There are 4 opening joinery windows in this garden shed. Yes these are joinery windows which include proper handcrafted mitered framework making this shed a very attractive feature too.

All Shire sheds are made from timber that is imported directly by Shire into the port of Wisbech and on their very own jetty right next to their factory. They are one of the few shed manufacturers around that do this so you can be assured that the timber used in your Shire Garden Shed is always the best quality around.  Shire ensure their timber is slow grown from sustainable sources which means a tighter grain and therefore less sap which in turn means that the timber used on Shire sheds will last much longer that other garden sheds.

See for yourself what value the Shire Harris Apex Garden Shed is by clicking the following link

Reinventing the Shed

Reinventing the Shed

I note there have been many recent attempts to reinvent the shed. There are Greenhouses with a shed attached, log cabins with a shed, summerhouses with a shed but as yet I haven’t come across a shed with a shed attached.

Im not surprised you may well ask why would you want a shed with a shed attached?

The answer lies with the multiple uses a shed has. Some may use a shed as a workshop others for storage or others where they relax with their hobby. The idea is that you have two sheds in one. A shed for the dirty work ie workshop or storage and the other shed for the clean stuff for your hobby or for pets, but the sheds are part of one structure.

Post your comments on your ideas for reinventing the common garden shed or maybe you think the typical shed is perfect as it is.
