Shed Trivia For Your Bank Holiday Weekend!

Let’s finish the week off with some shed related fun. Here are a few shed based trivia questions for you to ponder over the weekend! The first questions are based on the word shed, rather than sheds themselves.

Finally from me, I was recently reading about the Egyptian deity called Shed. Shed was also referred to as “Saviour”, and the Ancient Egyptians looked to Shed to cure illness and save them from danger. Here at Elbec we can’t promise that our sheds can do that, but we can promise that our sheds are of great quality at a low price!

Getting the most from your shed – part 2

Now that you have put a good wood preservative on the underneath of the shed floor this will help prevent rot. I mention a good wood preservative because nowadays the wood preservatives come with all sorts of goodies to fight rot and decay such as a water repellant and protection against fungal and algae.

Whilst you are protecting your shed I strongly recommend that you give the shed a good coat of preservative. If you have bought yourself a nice shiplap shed then turn this upside down before you treat it. This way all the treatment will run into the grooves for maximum protection. There is no need to treat the inside of the shed.

Once all this is done you can assemble your shed, but before you do so perhaps you should consider this tip.

We recommend a concrete base for the shed. You should ensure that the base is almost the same size as the foot print of the shed. This does 2 things. One is to encourage water run off away from the shed meaning your shed base wont be sitting in pools of water, the second is that if the base is much larger when it rains, the rain will bounce off the ground and soak the shed. The corners of the shed tend to get soaked and you will find in many sheds that show sign of rot that it is these corners that start to rot first.

Garden Sheds. Single Door or Double Door?

Many years ago you were hard pressed to find a shed with a double door, but then in the last decade double doors became more and more popular. Double doors were added to a garden shed as standard with the garden shed manufacturers and therefore this became the norm. If you wanted a garden shed then it came with a double door unless it was a 6 x 4 of course.

But recently the single door garden shed is starting becoming more available once again. Why is this?

I have a 10 x 6 shed with a double door garden shed which is used to store the usual garden shed stiff ie mower, bbq, family bikes, garden table and chairs, tools, paddling pools, game of giant genga, lots of other games and actually there is far more. I didn’t realize there was so much stuff in it yet. I have never found the need to have a double door on it though. The double door garden shed does of course allow easier access but I have never once thought when taking stuff in and out of my garden shed that I needed a garden shed with a double door.

The great thing about a garden shed with a single door though is that you can fit things down the front wings on each side of the door. So useful for items such as soades and mops etc. there I go again yet more stuff I can name in my shed and I still have enough room to step inside my garden shed and get to the back of my garden shed.

Sheds used as workshops

If you need a shed to use as your workshop then you have come to the right place at elbec garden buildings.

To use a shed as a workshop as you will probably be standing upright in it for quite a time then you need to make sure that the shed has plenty of headroom. You will probably want to fit a workbench into your shed either freestanding or fixed. You will therefore need a shed with strong framework.

The framework of a shed gives the shed its strength. If you therefore have a really large shed and the framework doesn’t match the size then you will all in probability end up with a shed that resembles one of those bendy buses.

It is recommended therefore that the shed you choose has a minimum of 2 x 2 in framework. 3 x 2 would be better but 2 x 2 is pretty strong. This will make your shed nice and sturdy and therefore you will be able to fit a workbench in it too. Fit a workbench to the framework of a shed that is much less than that and it will resemble a tail that wags a dog. Ie the weight of the workbench will probably pull the walls in of your shed.

So which sheds would we recommend for use as a workshop?

The cheapest 8 x 6 sheds are usually the overlap ones. Overlap sheds generally use timber from the UK forests. UK timber is considered inferior as the timber is fast grown. This usually means that there is a higher proportion of sap in the timber compared to timber from siberia or Scandinavia. This in turn means that the UK timber will not last anywhere near that of timber sourced from Siberia.

So not only is your 8 x 6 Durham Apex Garden shed manufactured from high grade timber it is almost twice as thick. 12mm thick tongue and groove boards are used compared to 6 or 7mm.

You also get an opening window with this shed compared to a fixed window that usually comes with an overlap shed.

The 8 x 6 Shire Durham Apex Garden shed comes with a single door. There is a tendency for a double door nowadays. The thing with a double door is that you can lose that space either side of the door which is ideal for storage. So a single door for your shed can actually be a big plus

I was reading a newspaper article the other day about sheds. It was about how people find other uses for their shed. Yes we all know that the garden shed is great for storing those items for the garden such as the lawn mower, garden tools and furniture etc. The garden shed is great for that. We know that the garden shed may be used as a workshop.

Have you made your shed into something that most people would never think of. For instance in the shed article one chap had made his shed into a bar. Yes a bar where he could serve drinks just like they do when you are on holiday by the pool. It looked great actually. This chap had taken a standard shed, an 8 x 6 by the look of it and simply made a hatch on the side that could be folded down to make the bar and then painted in tropical colours. He then was pictured serving all kinds of drinks from his garden shed.
