Offering a Wide Range of Garden Buildings

We here at Elbec pride ourselves on not only the excellent quality of our garden buildings, but also the wide range of garden buildings we have available. This means that if you are looking for the perfect garden building, you can probably find it somewhere in our selection of garden buildings.

So what garden buildings do we offer? Well firstly there is of course the shed. We offer plenty of choice in wooden, metal and plastic sheds, and with Shire wooden sheds we have the best sheds available. But if a shed isn’t the right garden building for you there are plenty more types of garden buildings on offer.

Summerhouses and Log Cabins both fall into the “like a shed, but prettier” category of garden building, and we have an excellent selection of both. The arbours, arches, gazebos and pergolas section of the website offers garden buildings that will beautify your garden.

We also have a huge selection of greenhouses available; these are obviously one of the more common garden buildings. Gardeners all over the country have been choosing the greenhouse as their garden building of choice, and we here at Elbec have got some fantastic greenhouses on offer.

So there we have just a few of the many different garden buildings on offer at Elbec. Check out the website and you will also find garden buildings for pets, playhouses and garden buildings for storage. So whatever you want from a garden building, you’ll find it at Elbec!

Shed Man versus Summerhouse Girl

Shed Man versus Summerhouse Girl

There seems to be an ever increasing battle between whether a shed or a summerhouse should be bought for the garden. More and more customers appear to buying a summerhouse for storage rather than a place to relax and entertain. Is this a good idea. We investigate.

A shed is generally cheaper, however the argument is that a summerhouse will look nicer in the garden. I have to agree there are some horrid looking sheds around. We at Elbec like to sell stylish looking sheds that will look very attractive in the garden. Check out the Shire popular range and professional ranges. Many of the windows are proper joinery windows in a Georgian cris cross style.

Many sheds use the top rail to hang the window from. This is a cheaper way of providing a window in a shed but it can make the shed look quite ugly. Shires sheds usually come with an opening window and the window is much more pleasing to the eye. The net result is that a Shire shed will not look like your average shed. This therefore mitigates the argument that a summerhouse will look far nicer in the garden.

A summerhouse usually comes with a fully or at least partially glazed door. A shed will usually have a solid door.

If you are going to use the shed or summerhouse as a place for storage remember that the glazed door will ensure that your items will be on the display from the outside.

Watch out for the quality of timber used in a shed

Watch out for the quality of timber used in a shed

Elbec mission is to provide the best quality garden sheds available at the most competitive prices.

Elbec are very good at this and here’s why.

If you compare sheds like for like, it can be very confusing. On paper they all seem to have the same specifications. Look a little closely and the extra cheap prices for a shed can unravel.

What makes up the price of a shed. Timber is the main material. But not all timber used in sheds is the same. Some timber is cheaper than others and therefore the quality will be lower. For example timber sourced from the UK is inherently of poor quality and is only fit for fencing. Some suppliers have used the cheapness of this timber to make overlap sheds. Look at the Elbec 7 x 7 overlap shed. This shed is made from Siberian timber which is of the best quality and therefore you shed will last longer much longer than those sheds made from the cheaper timber.

Shire who Elbec recommend source all their timber from Siberia. Shire is unique in that they have there own quayside and therefore timber can be imported direct to Shire without additional road journeys. This allows Shire to get a very good price for their timber. So you get a shed made from the best timber at a price not much more than those sheds made from the poorer quality timber.

If the price of the timber goes up the price of the shed will go up. Shire will not compromise on quality for the sake of price.

All shires competitors acknowledge that Shire make the best sheds at the best price.

Have you seen the Avesbury 19mm Log Cabin yet?

Have you seen the Avesbury 19mm Log Cabin yet?

The Avesbury 19mm log cabin is available for an incredible £549 for the 7ft x 7ft model and a very improbable £599 for the 8 x 8ft model.

Summerhouses which are quite often constructed using 12mm tongue and groove shiplap boarding usually cost far more than the Avesbury log cabin or are very close to this price.

A summerhouse will come in larger preconstructed panels making construction relatively straightforward. The 19mm log cabins are constructed log by log , which are a bit more time consuming but in my opinion the end result is a nicer building.

You will get more for your money by buying the Avesbury 19mm log cabin rather than a summerhouse. The beauty of a log cabin is that inside there will be no framework. This makes the insideof a log cabin a work of art and makes you feel very relaxed. There is nothing better than relaxing in a wooden building that looks pleasing to the eye, inside and out.

Some manufacturers out there will try and convince you that a log cabin needs supporting framework inside. If they are made properly like ours are then they do not need anything so crass to hold your log cabin together.

The Avesbury log cabin is constructed using the finest Siberian timber and machined by the very latest in log cabin technology.

The completed structure is a strong log cabin that looks great in any garden. The log cabin is finished off using proper joinery windows and doors, that incorporate a draught proof system.

With a very generous 5ft 11” (1800mm) eaves height and 6ft 10” (2100mm) ridge height and these are internal measurements you also get plenty of headroom in the Avesbury Log Cabin

Getting the Most Out of Your Shed (Final part)

Getting the Most Out of Your Shed  (Final part)

Making the shed base to the same as the front print of the shed will prevent rain bouncing off the ground. Another way to do this is to build a shed base using gravel or shingles. This is easy and unlike concrete where you have to ensure it is perfectly level; you can level the gravel out a lot easier.

Simply take out the top soil so you have a nice firm ground. You can generally spread the top soil removed for the shed base around the rest of the garden. Next put down a porous matting or membrane. You can usually buy this from a local diy store or garden centre. This will allow water to drain away but will prevent unsightly weeds from growing underneath the shed.

Next cover the shed base with gravel or shingle. This also gives an attractive finish to the shed base and is less harsh than concrete. The great thing is you don’t need to get the gravel perfectly level for your shed. Next you will need some blocks of wood to put under the shed. These are known as bearers and should be 2 x 3” or 3 x 3”, placed perpendicular ie at right angles to the bearers already underneath the shed. These bearers must be level but to do so you simply push the bearers into the gravel to make them level for the shed.

Once the bearers are level you can then build your shed. The great thing about gravel or shingles is that your shed will look great sitting on this base and when it rains the shingle or gravel disperses the rain water naturally therefore avoiding your shed being soaked.

Follow these tips and your shed will last for many years.

Getting the most from your shed - part 2

Getting the most from your shed – part 2

Now that you have put a good wood preservative on the underneath of the shed floor this will help prevent rot. I mention a good wood preservative because nowadays the wood preservatives come with all sorts of goodies to fight rot and decay such as a water repellant and protection against fungal and algae.

Whilst you are protecting your shed I strongly recommend that you give the shed a good coat of preservative. If you have bought yourself a nice shiplap shed then turn this upside down before you treat it. This way all the treatment will run into the grooves for maximum protection. There is no need to treat the inside of the shed.

Once all this is done you can assemble your shed, but before you do so perhaps you should consider this tip.

We recommend a concrete base for the shed. You should ensure that the base is almost the same size as the foot print of the shed. This does 2 things. One is to encourage water run off away from the shed meaning your shed base wont be sitting in pools of water, the second is that if the base is much larger when it rains, the rain will bounce off the ground and soak the shed. The corners of the shed tend to get soaked and you will find in many sheds that show sign of rot that it is these corners that start to rot first.

Part 3 next
