We recommend nothing less than a 28mm log thickness when buying log cabins. You will see that some retailers are driving down the price of log cabins. The reason they can do this is by saving on the volume of timber used in a building by using 19mm logs.
Oh yes the log cabins look great in a photograph all nicely dressed up but it is very difficult to dress mutton up as lamb.
Elbec have spoken to the UK’s top manufacturers of log cabins and have asked them if they will be manufacturing log cabins of 19mm. The answer was an emphatic NO. Definitely not!
The problem you see is that on a shed, 19mm is fantastic, superb quality, but the boards are supported by framework at the back of it, which reduces the movement of the timber boards.
A Log cabins strength come from the corners; there is no supporting framework behind the logs like there is in a shed. Put the 19mm logs together and you are likely to see daylight through the joining logs.
On 28mm log cabins the corners have a 4 way join, creating a tight windproof, stable structure.
A 19mm log is likely to have a two way join and when you are sitting inside when there is a strong wind around you are goind to feel the drafts. There is simply not enough timber to create a 4 way join or even a strong 2 way join using a 19mm log and if you did the timber left over would be so thin it would be susceptible to fracturing once constructed.
The 19mm log cabins are therefore likely to be flimsy and wobble when leaning against it unlike a sturdy draft free 28mm log cabin.
The longer the logs the more likely the 19mm logs will warp. Oh dear, but it isnt funny when you have spent good money on a 19mm log cabin.
What the log cabin manufactures do agree on is that the 19mm log are great for playhouses!
So we are not going to sell to the public 19mm log cabins but what we have come up with is a 28mm log cabin at a 19mm price, complete with felt tiles, toughened glass and a striking overhang the 10’ x 8’ Rutland log cabin simply has to be the best deal around.
Alternatively we strongly suggest you stretch yourselves that bit further for a proper log cabin that will last a life time.
