The Shed
Shire are one of the largest if not the largest manufacturers of garden sheds in the UK. They have a reputation within the shed industry for manufacturing the best quality and most attractive garden sheds in the UK at the best value for money price.
Shire actually are unique in that they receive their timber in shipments direct to their own quay in Wisbech. They then process their own timber, so they have control of the entire manufacturing process. Shire will only use the very best Russian and Scandanavian Timber. They do not compromise quality by looking to buy the cheapest timber around. They source quality first and then price and not the other way round like some shed manufacturers do.
The timber Shire use for their sheds is tight grained. The tighter the grain the less sap in the timber and the longer the timber will last. Cheap timbers often have lots of sap and although they may look no different from the more expensive timber you will find that the cheaper timber will not last.
The Jersey shed is no exception. A lot of sheds have their windows built using the top rail of the shed wall. Shire dont use that method. They provide proper joinery windows that look fantastic and are opening rather than fixed. The Jersey comes with 3 large opening windows with a georgian style cross. The windows really set the Shire sheds in a class of their own, creating a stylish feature that makes the shed an attractive feature in the garden.
The Shire Jersey Shed is constructed using a modular construction. The idea behind this is the flexibility of the shed in construction. Each panel can be easily handled by one person and if access to you garden is a problem, the Shire Jersey shed is the perfect solution.
Each panel can be taken through a standard house door and through the house and into the garden. Thats not all. As the wall and window panels are all of the same size the windows and wall panels can be placed anywhere, ie you can put all the windows down either side or you can put some on one side and some on the other side.
The framework is 34mm square and all the frame work in a Shire garden shed is rounded. Particularly important if you happen to bang your head, there will be no sharp edges and therefore you will be unlikely to have a nasty gash from such bad luck.
12mm profiled shiplap cladding is used for the walls and is constructed using proper double sided tongue and groove unlike the inferior single sided rebatted shiplap used by some manufacturers.
The floor is constructed from tongue and groove boards, again using 12mm thick boards which provide a nice sturdy floor. Attached to the floor are 34mm bearers ideal for sitting on a concrete or slab base and allows good airflow under the building; this is important to dry out damp timbers and therefore prevent rotting.
If you are thinking of using the Jersey Shed for something really heavy such as a motorbike I would recommend that the floor is reinforced using plywood, Anything else and it is more than adequate.
Access to the Shire Jersey Shed is via double doors. A padbolt is provided for security. You will need to provide your own padlock if you wish to lock your garden shed.
The roof of apex design is made from OSB or oriented strand board to give its full name. Now please do not confuse OSB with chipboard. It is nothing like it. OSB is actually more similar to plywood and is considered a superior product. OSB is strong and water resistant and ideal for roofing in a garden shed.
The roof also has an nice 1ft overhang that adds even more style to the Jersey garden Shed. This actually makes the roof 14ft long.
The Shire Jersey Garden Shed comes standard with water based a first coat dipped treatment. This will need retreating immediately. There is also the option of pressure treatment for a little extra. Pressure treatment is well the worth the bit extra. Treatment is forced into the timber at high pressure ensuring you get maximum life out of the shed. It requires less maintenance and doesnt need retreating again. The pressure treatment doesnt waterproof the shed so you may want to apply a waterproofing product. Ensure it is water based though as an oil based product will not take.
When new the pressure treatment will give it a very slight green tinge which looks very attractive. The colouring can vary and may look almost colourless, which gives it a natural finish.
Just left the pressure treated shed will eventually weather to a grey colour. If you want to keep this stylish shed fresh looking simply retreat with a water based timber preservative.
Comprehensive instructions are supplied with the shed. They are easy to follow with picture illustrations. The shed may not be as quick to construct as some other sheds due to its modular design, but the very nature of its design ensure that a lot of the wall framing doubles up, therefore giving the shed extra strength that you wouldnt normally find in a shed like this. So although it is not the fastest shed around it more than makes up for it in quality and looks when constructed.
The price of the Jersey Garden Shed is really quite unbelievable. You get quality, loads of space, a stylish shed that looks great in the garden and will last for years to come. In our opinion it has to be the best value for money shed in the UK today.
The only drawback i can see with this shed is that inside although it is 13 ft long; the shed it is more like 6ft 6" wide rather than 7ft wide inside.
Still it offers masses of internal space and at the price it is sold at, this shed is a must if you have the space, especially with the pressure treatment.
