Getting the Most From Your Shed
Quite often you hear people say I think I need to renew my shed. It is over 20 years old now and looks the worse for wear.
Now 20 years of life for a shed represents really good value. The trick is though is maintaining your shed.
If you get a good shed and Elbec sell very good sheds then all you need to do is keep your shed well maintained. The reason why many sheds do not last long is that they are allowed to get wet. Timber that is constantly damp will mean that the timber will rot within a fairly short space of time.
You therefore need to keep your shed dry. Good Airflow is the weapon against rot. When you build your shed you need to make sure that your shed is on a suitable base. Ideally the base for a shed should be made of concrete of say 10cm deep. By incorporating a damp proof course, a plastic sheet will do, this will reduce the amount of damp that is allowed to reach the surface of the base.
A good shed will have enough sturdy bearers attached to the floor of the shed. This minimizes contact with the ground and allows air to flow underneath the shed. This in turn helps dry out damp or wet timbers.
On constructing the shed make sure you give the base a good couple of coats of a branded wood preservative. You will hopefully not see the underneath of the shed for another 20 years, so this is important.
